Purchase tickets here

About Beth Snapp:

Singer-songwriter Beth Snapp might be considered pop infused roots, but her appeal has little to do with the box of a genre. It’s a connection. She flits around and between folk, bluegrass, pop, early R&B and jazz to create a unique sound with one purpose – to serve a story. Snapp recorded her latest album, Don’t Apologize, with NewSong Recordings at Echo Mountain Studios in Asheville, NC.

About Carly Taich:

North Carolina-based musician, Carly Taich, is tough to pin down. Just when you think you’ve got her figured out, she takes off in a new direction with her hand out-stretched, waving for you to follow. She may be quick but she’d never leave you behind. This patient yet resolute nature has been revealed, like most innovative things, to be a strength for the seraphic songwriter. She holds a magnifying glass to her own soul before turning it on others. She has an unexpected, laissez-faire way of tackling the human experience, then holding it with humor and grace as if to always be secretly saying to her audience, “You are not alone.”

About My One And Only:

My One And Only gathers it’s strength from Southern-Soul mixed with Curious-Grit. They’ve honed their sound in individual crucibles on stage, TV, radio, solo recording, engineering and producing. The merger brings true-to-life lyrics that bid you to wander through hidden scenes in their lives – to find heart, emotions, the real. Blanket the raw with hollow-body guitars and home-grown harmonies, and My One And Only’s music cuts through. My One And Only released their debut album “The Past Year”, produced by Grammy Award-nominated Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes,) and features all original songs by the duo – husband and wife Benjamin and Kassie Wilson. They have played stages throughout the U.S., as well as touring in Uganda, Africa, and have both graced the stage of the famed Ryman Auditorium in their hometown of Nashville.

About Alexa Rose:

Alexa Rose has the rare ability to find strikingly original melodies that nevertheless sound like they must have existed for a long time, stored away maybe in the ether of creativity, self-evident and awaiting discovery. Moving deftly between complex dexterity and heart-tugging familiarity, Rose achieves a sound that pushes gently alongside the bright vocal experimentalism of Joni Mitchell and Joanna Newsom while maintaining the brassy attitude and simple refrains that run straight through American roots music from mountain ballads to rock n roll.

1. Meet our 2018 NEwSong competition Finalists (and judges!) on the blog

Keep an eye out this week as we introduce our 2018 NewSong Music Performance & Songwriting Competition finalists and judges. We’re sharing videos, artist links and interviews with the artists who will compete at Isis Music Hall on Dec. 15! So far, we have introduced Nashville-based songwriter Suzie Brown and Asheville, NC-based artist Carly Taich

Brown speaks to the challenges of balancing her songwriting career with the demands of motherhood and her career as a physician. Taich discusses her songwriting process: “When I’m writing, I often feel like two parts of my brain are fighting. One part wants to solve the song like a puzzle, while the other part wants to be totally abstract. I’m just standing in the middle trying to get them to compromise.”

2. Rachael Kilgour’s “holy We are” featured in Rolling Stone’s “10 best country and Americana songs of the week”

Congratulations to Rachael Kilgour, whose new single, “Holy Are We,” from her forthcoming NewSong Recordings release, Game Changer, (avail Feb 1) is one of this week’s Top 10 Country and Americana Songs in Rolling Stone.

From Rolling Stone: “‘If my greatest sin is to love her well, you can send me to hell,’ Rachel Kilgour sings, turning this acoustic ballad into a stunning defense of same-sex love. A light string arrangement swoons lovingly in the background, but Kilgour’s unapologetic lyrics are the real treat here, taking an unapologetically personal look at the ways in which ignorant outsiders can mistake something sacred for blasphemy.”

4. 2018 NewSong Competition Finalist Suzie Brown featured in Harvard Magazine

2018 NewSong finalist Suzie Brown was recently featured in Harvard Magazine in an article titled, “Vocals, Guitar, and Stethoscope: Suzie Brown, M.D., writes prescriptions—and love songs.” The article explores Brown’s journey to balance her two careers as a cardiologist and a musician.

From Harvard Magazine: “For more than a decade she committed herself to becoming a top research cardiologist. Then, in 2009, just as she was about to complete a grant proposal that would have funded her work into her forties, she decided she couldn’t ignore her musical desires any longer. She abandoned the grant for a part-time clinical job, treating patients with heart failure, and devoted the rest of her time to making and promoting her music. She says the decision felt reckless at first: “I think I was afraid to admit to myself that I didn’t want a high-powered academic career…even if I could have had it.”

Meet 2018 NewSong Competition finalist: Carly Taich

Monday, December 3rd, 2018

(From the artist’s bio): North Carolina-based musician, Carly Taich, is tough to pin down.

Inspired by alternative-pop egos from the Andrew Sisters to Andrew Bird, Taich has coined her music “fearless folk-pop” to no one’s opposition. Since planting herself in Asheville three short years ago, she has won multiple songwriting awards and in 2018 performed in some of the area’s favorite music festivals and one of the nation’s biggest and best, Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival. Her recent album, Reverie, was regarded by Blurt Magazine as “a start-to-finish, no-filler/all-killer gem—a veritable calling card to greatness if enough ears find it.”

We asked Carly some questions about her songwriting process and what it means to be a NewSong finalist. To purchase tickets for the Dec. 15 event at Isis Music Hall, visit our ticketing page.

What is your songwriting process like?

My process is always changing and is hard to nail down. When I’m writing, I often feel like two parts of my brain are fighting. One part wants to solve the song like a puzzle, while the other part wants to be totally abstract. I’m just standing in the middle trying to get them to compromise. Lately I’ve been inspired by some good advice to keep working that muscle and write every single day. My number one priority is to always have fun doing it.

What does it mean to you to be selected as a NewSong finalist, and what do you hope to get out of the experience?

It’s an honor. I hope to be inspired by all the talent and make some lasting connections with the other songwriters.

What important news about your music do you have coming up?

I have two new singles I am very excited to release. Release date TBA!

Weekly roundup: NewSong Artist News 10/15-10/21

We love to keep up with our past NewSong Music Contest finalists and winners, and, over the years, we have amassed a busy and hardworking group of musicians we admire.

NewSong songwriters live and perform across the continent and beyond, their work spans multiple genres, and these artists are always putting out new material. To keep track of all their news and upcoming shows, we will be highlighting NewSong artists in our weekly roundup.

We’ve put together a list of five shows, publications and recordings we think you should be paying attention to this week.

1. David Robert King & Crys Matthews – “Have Mercy” video Release 10/19

Atlanta-based singer-songwriter and longstanding guitarist for Mary Gauthier, David Robert King, and Virginia-based singer-songwriter Crys Matthews are proud to announce a new collaboration, “Have Mercy.” The single, a response to family separation along the US southern border, is slated for release Friday, October 19..

“Have Mercy” was recorded at Echo Mountain Recording Studios in Asheville, NC and produced by Gar Ragland of NewSong Recordings. King and Matthews met as finalists last year in the esteemed NewSong Music Competition at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City, where Matthews took the Grand Prize, and King was her runner-up. The songwriters kept in touch, and, less than a year later, they found themselves in Asheville, NC, recording the co-written single.

Look out for “Have Mercy” this Friday on your favorite music platform! In the meantime, listen to David Robert King and Crys Matthews on Spotify.

2. David berkeley – “This be dear to me” video release

David Berkeley recently released his shimmering lyric video for “This Be Dear
To Me” from his forthcoming EP The Faded Red And Blue, out November 2. The
imagery moving behind the words is a 40-foot watercolor painting by Santa Fe artist
Stan Berning that was used in the 2005 movie “Off The Map.” Berkeley’s eight-
year-old son Noah hand wrote the lyrics. PopMatters premiered the video, writing, “[This Be Dear To Me is] a hauntingly beautiful track that perfectly encapsulates all that David Berkeley does best.”

Berkeley has announced a Fall/Winter tour. See his website for confirmed dates. Listen to Berkeley on Spotify

3. Chris velan – “Amateur Hour” album release + “All time record” video

Chris Velan’s single “All Time Record” held the #7 spot on the CBC Music chart this month, the latest in a string of critical acclaim for Velan’s latest album, Amateur Hour. The album, released in September 2018, unfolds like a series of monologues in a one-act play where the characters are locked in a room and forced to respond and react to unexpected news, discovering that what they thought to be true of themselves was in fact not.

“Both in its title and lyrics, [“Amateur Hour”] came to encapsulate for me the themes of the album, representing them in this imagined, psychic space; Some dingy bar with a tiny stage where we all assemble as eternally helpless beginners, forever witnessing each other’s efforts to surrender to that inescapable truth,” says Velan.

Listen to Velan’s Amateur Hour on Spotify.

4.  Carly Taich – Upcoming performances

Asheville, NC-based indie folk artist Carly Taich has three great shows coming up in Asheville. The “fearless folk-pop” artist impressed judges at the 2018 LEAF Singer-Songwriter Competition, and her unique brand of “fearless folk-pop” earned her first place.

Taich will perform with fellow LEAF finalists My One and Only at Isis Music Hall Oct. 17; The Grey Eagle on Oct. 18, opening for Eilen Jewell; and at LEAF Oct. 20.

Listen to Carly Taich on Spotify

5. Music Modernization act signed into law

The Music Modernization Act was signed into law on October 11, which may have big consequences for those working in the music industry. It is a comprehensive bill that aims to reform the current music licensing system and give music creators an opportunity to obtain compensation that more accurately reflects the value of music.

Elizabeth Matthews, chief executive officer of ASCAP, says, “The MMA’s unanimous passage in the House and Senate proves that the power of music is a great unifier.”

Carly Taich wins the fifth annual LEAF Festival Singer-Songwriter Competition, presented by NewSong Music

Monday, May 14th, 2018

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Folk-pop artist Carly Taich has been named the winner of the fifth annual LEAF Festival Singer-Songwriter Competition, presented by NewSong Music. Taich – who along with seven other finalist singer-songwriter solo and duo acts – was selected from more than 500 entries to this year’s contest. The finalists performed at LEAF Saturday, May 12, in front of the packed Barn venue and judges Gar Ragland, music producer and founder of NewSong Music; Alli Marshall, arts editor at Mountain Xpress; and Jeff Santiago, a local musician and operations manager at the Orange Peel.

2018 LEAF Contest winner Carly Taich, performing with accompanist/violinist Alex Travers on Saturday, May 12 in the Barn at the 46th LEAF Festival in Black Mountain, NC.

Other finalists were Alexa Rose from Asheville, NC; Randy Steele from Chattanooga, TN; My One and Only from Nashville, TN; Lee Jean Jr. from Raefield, NC; Joe Shields from Northern Michigan; and Leon + the Fantastic from San Mateo, CA. Taich, My One and Only and Alexa Rose were the three songwriters selected to move on to the second and final round.

Taich will release a new single this summer, the first release since her October 2017 album titled Reverie. Her music video for her song “Give Me a Likeness” recently won “Best Soundtrack” at the Music Video Asheville awards show. She, along with her band, will perform at Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival this June.

Of her time spent at the LEAF Singer-Songwriter Competition, Taich says, “The LEAF/NewSong Competition was awesome. From start to finish, a great experience. I loved their emphasis on it being a celebration of songwriting rather than a cut-throat competition.”

Taich says she played mostly new songs at the competition, as opposed to what she calls “the more tried and true stuff.” This made the win that much sweeter, says the songwriter. “This really affirmed the direction I’m going with my writing,” says Taich. “I have so much respect for the judges and admire their work, so that makes the win all the more rewarding. I’m so grateful to NewSong, LEAF, and my good friend Alex Travers for accompanying me on violin and adding greater depth to my songs. I am still pinching myself that I get to perform at the fall LEAF later this year!”

“We had an outstanding pool of finalists this year for the 5th annual LEAF Competition,” says NewSong founder and producer Ragland. “I’m always amazed at the caliber of songwriting and performances each year, and this year was certainly no exception.”

“The caliber of musicianship was so high, and the creativity really on-point.” says judge Alli Marshall. “Each artist managed to channel themes and sounds from the American songbook while bringing something truly authentic to the stage. From roots-country to radio-ready pop, it was a thrilling showcase.”

Adding to that, judge Jeff Santiago, an accomplished songwriter and performer himself, says “Choosing this year’s winner was quite difficult. I felt Carly made bold choices in her writing, as well as the selection of songs she presented.”

As the winner of the LEAF Singer-Songwriter Competition, Taich will receive a paid, featured performance at the fall 2018 LEAF Festival (October 18-21, in Black Mountain, NC), including lodging and accommodations. She’ll also receive an opening performance at Asheville’s the Grey Eagle music venue on Thursday, October 18, for artist Eileen Jewell, and a featured performance on Wednesday, October 17, in the Lounge at Asheville’s Isis Music Hall.

Taich also advances as a finalist in the 17th annual, international NewSong Showcase and Competition, held later this year. The grand-prize winner of that contest will be awarded the opportunity to make a six-song EP, recorded and mixed at Echo Mountain Recording Studios in Asheville and released on the NewSong Recordings label; and a performance showcase at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival’s coveted ASCAP Music Café. The 2018 NewSong Music Contest is now accepting entries.

Meet LEAF Contest Finalist: Carly Taich

Thursday, May 10th, 2018

Carly Taich is an Asheville, NC-based songwriter whose songs are at once soft and intense, fantastical and real. Her performances boast orchestral-rock arrangements paired with swooning vocals. Add in her her witty and irreverent writing style, and it’s no wonder Carly has steadily gained recognition in Asheville and beyond.

Taich will release a brand new single this summer, the first release since her October 2017 album titled Reverie. Her music video for her song “Give Me a Likeness” recently won “Best Soundtrack” at the Music Video Asheville awards show.  To top it off, she, along with her powerhouse band, will perform at Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival this June.

We asked Carly some questions to learn more about her artistic process and vision. See her perform at NewSong’s LEAF Singer-Songwriter Competition Saturday May 12

What is your songwriting process like?

I write with my guitar. Usually the melody and lyrics come out together and inform each other. It’s nice to have no idea where your song is going and let each line unfold all together. Completely on the contrary, lately, I’ve been inspired by the more structured and repetitive verses of old hymns and folk tunes, and in that case, I may approach the lyrics more like a puzzle, trying to squeeze the most accurate picture into just a few syllables. Paper is my best friend.

Where do you find inspiration? Do you have any songwriting heroes?

Growing up I was exposed to songwriters from every generation and recall a lot of Cat Stevens, the Beatles and the Andrew Sisters, among so many others. On my own I ventured into Tori Amos and Elliott Smith, which was my first exploration into more alternative songwriting. I also loved musical theater and am still very inspired by the big song productions of old musicals.

What does it mean to you to be selected as a NewSong finalist, and what do you hope to get out of the experience?

It’s an honor to be considered among such wonderful songwriters. I hope to make some new friends who I can collaborate or share the stage with again, perhaps at a future LEAF. It’s a great opportunity to get to connect with other artists from around the country through an event like the NewSong competition.

What would you like your audience to know about you and your music?

I just try to be as honest as possible in my own language. Songwriting has always been the most natural way for me to express the deep complexities of life. I’m grateful that I get to share my stories with those will listen!
