There are so many talented artists who are part of the NewSong family — it can sometimes be difficult to keep up! That’s why each week, we compile a list of new releases, shows, and videos from past NewSong artists who we think deserve your attention. 

Mel Bryant & the Mercy Makers— FREE shows in NYC

2018 NewSong Grand Prize Winner, Mel Bryant, is returning to her New York City roots with a four-show run this summer. Mel and her Nashville-based, indie rock band will play at Dinosaur Bar-B-Que in Syracuse on July 27; Grace Plaza on July 31, a SoFar Sounds show on July 31; and Brookfield Place on August 1. Suzie Brown — ‘Under the Surface’ Tour

Suzie Brown, Nashville-based songwriter and finalist in our 2018 competition, will be on tour this summer supporting her new album, Under the Surface. Parade Magazine calls the album an “honest record that finds her fronting a full-sized band, with layers of Telecaster twang, Southern soul and swirling keyboards.” For full list of tour dates and locations, check out Suzie’s website. 

 

Slowpacker — Summer Tour

Slowpacker — the stage name of Asheville, NC-based musician Jack Victor — will be touring this summer across the Southeast, plus two shows in New York City. His Aug. 15 show in NYC at Brookfield Place is part of NewSong Music’s free summer concert series.

“Songs are made from starts and stops, periods of fullness followed by periods of emptiness,” says Victor. “I’ve been around this cycle many times in the last few years. Each time, there is one song that is the inspiration for many others to come. My One & Only — August Shows

Americana duo and past NewSong LEAF finalists My One & Only are on the road this August. The Nashville-based band will team up with fellow LEAF finalist Alexa Rose for a show in Asheville, NC on August 18. Kassie and Benjamin meld old-school country, singer-songwriter, and alternative folk-rock into a sound that can only be described as “Southern-Soul and Curious-Grit.” Learn more about the band on My One & Only’s website. 

 

Submissions for 2019 NewSong Singer Songwriting Competition are open! 

This year’s grand prize winner will receive an all-expense paid six-song EP, recorded and mixed at Asheville, NC’s Echo Mountain Recording Studios and released on the NewSong Recordings label. 

The grand prize winner will also receive a performance showcase at the esteemed 2019 ASCAP Music Café at the Sundance Film Festival (January 23 – February 3, 2020) in Park City, Utah, and a be booked for a paid, featured main stage performance at this summer’s Arts Brookfield Summer Plaza Series in New York City.

Join NewSong finalists for first ever ‘NewSong in Nashville’ performance showcase March 7

NewSong is proud to announce our first ever “NewSong in Nashville” performance showcase on March 7 at The Listening Room Cafe in Nashville. Four past finalists from the LEAF Festival Competition will reunite for a night of songwriting and performances. 

Performers include Beth Snapp, who recorded her latest album, Don’t Apologize (2018), with NewSong Recordings; Carly Taich, who won the 2018 LEAF Competition and went on to be a top three finalist in the NewSong Songwriting Competition in December; Nashville-based duo My One and Only; and Asheville, NC-based songwriter Alexa Rose. About Beth Snapp:

Singer-songwriter Beth Snapp might be considered pop infused roots, but her appeal has little to do with the box of a genre. It’s a connection. She flits around and between folk, bluegrass, pop, early R&B and jazz to create a unique sound with one purpose – to serve a story. Snapp recorded her latest album, Don’t Apologize, with NewSong Recordings at Echo Mountain Studios in Asheville, NC.

About Carly Taich:


North Carolina-based musician, Carly Taich, is tough to pin down. Just when you think you’ve got her figured out, she takes off in a new direction with her hand out-stretched, waving for you to follow. She may be quick but she’d never leave you behind. This patient yet resolute nature has been revealed, like most innovative things, to be a strength for the seraphic songwriter. She holds a magnifying glass to her own soul before turning it on others. She has an unexpected, laissez-faire way of tackling the human experience, then holding it with humor and grace as if to always be secretly saying to her audience, “You are not alone.”

My One And Only gathers it’s strength from Southern-Soul mixed with Curious-Grit. They’ve honed their sound in individual crucibles on stage, TV, radio, solo recording, engineering and producing. The merger brings true-to-life lyrics that bid you to wander through hidden scenes in their lives – to find heart, emotions, the real. Blanket the raw with hollow-body guitars and home-grown harmonies, and My One And Only’s music cuts through. My One And Only released their debut album “The Past Year”, produced by Grammy Award-nominated Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes,) and features all original songs by the duo – husband and wife Benjamin and Kassie Wilson. Weekly Roundup: NewSong Artist News 1/14-1/20

Happy New Year everyone!

After a somewhat relaxing holiday break, we’re rested up and super excited to help keep you up-to-date on all the great shows, releases and collaborations that are in store this year for the ever-growing and talented community of NewSong artists. 

These performing songwriters live and perform across the continent and beyond, and their work spans multiple genres. To keep track of it all, we’ve put together a list of shows, album releases and other happenings that we think you should be paying attention to this week.

 

1. 2018 NewSong grand prize winner mel bryant to perform at Sundance ASCAP Music Cafe

Big congrats to Mel Bryant for her grand prize win this past December at the NewSong Music Competition finals. As part of her prize, Mel will travel to Park City, Utah to showcase in the Sundance Film Festival’s esteemed Sundance ASCAP Music Café on Thursday, January 31 and Friday, February 1. Other performers at the ASCAP Music Cafe this year will include Patty Griffin, Lee Ann Womack, and others in an incredible lineup of both accomplished and up-and-coming songwriters. 

We’ll be doing a ‘Facebook Live’ webcast of her two performances from our Facebook page. Both shows begin at 2 PM MST / 4 PM EST.

2. Blue Yonder’s ‘Rough and Ready Heart’ places in No Depression‘s year-end Critic’s Poll

Blue Yonder’s 2018 album Rough and Ready Heart (NewSong Recordings) has received many accolades since its early June release, and was recently counted among the No Depression critics’ ‘favorite roots music albums of the 2018.’ Recorded at Echo Mountain Recording Studios in Asheville, NC, Rough and Ready Heart introduces listeners to characters dealing with life and death, love and loss, memories and aspirations – with stories set to a pleasing arc of Americana styles ranging from barn-burning rockers to gentle waltzes to mournful ballads to inspirational anthems. 

The Charleston, West Virginia-based band was in great company among the other artists included in the year-end poll. We encourage you to check out the full list and catch up on some great listening!

3. Critics call Rachael Kilgour “Folk Music’s Next Big Thing” // vinyl pre-order for “game changer” available Feb. 1

 

Rachael Kilgour’s latest album Game Changer will be released on February 1 on NewSong Recordings, and is now available for pre-order on 180g vinyl, CD and digital download. 

Leading up to the release, the Duluth, MN songwriter is garnering praise from critics across the country, including a recent feature in Rolling Stone for the EP’s first single, “Holy Are We.”

Meet LEAF Contest Finalist: My One And Only

My One And Only is an Americana duo comprised of married couple Kassie and Benjamin Wilson. Their music can be described as “Southern soul mixed with curious grittiness” and their talent has been shared across the country, from intimate house concerts to the legendary Ryman Auditorium in their hometown of Nashville. 
 
My One And Only will record their debut EP in late May with producer Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes “Boys and Girls”) in Nashville. “You can expect reckless meanderings about loud people, some thoughts about our parents’ age, and some cries for Divine mercy,” says Benjamin. The album is due for release mid-2018. 
 
We asked My One and Only some questions to learn more about their songwriting process and vision. 

My One And Only will perform at NewSong’s LEAF Singer-Songwriter Competition Saturday May 12.

 

What is your songwriting process like? 

Kassie and I consciously make time to songwrite each week. In a lot of cases, we find that inspiration follows action. Since there are two of us, our songs are put through two filters, which brings about a unique blend of style and point-of-view. We always try to come from a fresh perspective, and to have something in our songs that the listener can really grab ahold of, whether that be a sweet harmony or a slightly off-kilter lyric.
 

Where do you find inspiration? Do you have any songwriter heroes? 

Together, we have been inspired by (and loved) old country songs written by the likes of Kris Kristofferson and Hank Williams, Sr. Also, John Prine and Lori McKenna have been songwriters we’ve looked up to. Adam Duritz of Counting Crows was very influential to me growing up, and Lionel Richie was frequently on the record player as Kassie was growing up.
 

What does it mean to you to be selected as a NewSong finalist, and what do you hope to get out of the experience? 

We were so excited to be chosen as a NewSong finalist. Of the many entries into this competition that seeks out the best songwriting, to be picked out is reaffirming and encouraging. Most of all, we are looking forward to just being a part of the LEAF Festival as performing NewSong finalists. This will be an incredible opportunity to put our art in front of people, and also to be a part of a community that has the same mind as us. 
 

What would you like your audience to know about you and your music? 

Music is powerful! Combining the emotions that notes and melodies can bring with the transfer of thoughts in lyrics is a dynamite recipe. We hope that, in our music, you can feel what we feel and learn what we have learned. We hope that it connects with you on some level, that it feels natural and sweet. We hope that it feels like home. And if it does, then hang with us for a while! We can walk this journey together.
