Jenny Fares: LEAF Singer-Songwriter Competition Judge

Sunday, May 8th, 2022

NewSong Music is readying for this year’s LEAF Singer-Songwriter Competition and Showcase.

The event is a collaborative effort between NewSong Music and LEAF Community Arts. It aims to identify and recognize exceptional performers and songwriters from across the country. The finalists are invited to network and compete at the Spring LEAF Retreat, on Saturday, May 14.

Judges for the event include artists and music industry professionals in Asheville, N.C.

A creative force to be reckoned with, Jenny Fares has been an active player in Asheville’s artistic community for nearly thirteen years. Jenny is a mover, shaker, and all around crowd rouser. Her collaborations are a walloping cacophony of sound and fury, art and fun. She thrives in creative, energetic circles – and it shows. She was featured on the cover of Asheville Citizen-Times for creating a “legacy of innovative music programming” for the city. She founded and ran Music Video Asheville for 5 years and the Brown Bag Songwriting Competition. As the former lead singer of Asheville folk favorite, Jen and the Juice, she headlined area festivals including LAAFF and Downtown After Five, and the band’s record Meet the Hooligans of Bohemia was named among the top 10 regional albums of 2006 by 88.7 WNCW.

Coppa Stone: LEAF Singer-Songwriter Competition Judge

Friday, May 6th, 2022

The May 14 competition, held at the LEAF Retreat, will be judged by a panel of Asheville-based music industry professionals.

Originally from Kingston, Jamaica, Coppa Stone is a father, artist, writer, educator, scholar, and a self-proclaimed day dreamer. His earliest musical memories are of Roots, Rocksteady and Dub, mixed with Reggae and a touch of Rock, R&B and Soul. Upon relocating to the U.S., his love for music continued to grow alongside this thing called Hip-Hop. During the day, he plays the role of a mild-mannered Education Director at a nonprofit, but at night, he changes into his alter ego, a Hip-Hop & Reggae music artist.

Here’s a bit more about Coppa, in his own words, from an Islandstagemag.com interview:

I am definitely a product of my parents creativity. My mother sings, and my father plays both the piano and organ, so it could only be natural that music and art would be an active part of my life.

[My inspirations range] from the Beatles to the Maytals, from Peter Tosh to Bob Marley to Nina Simone, from Colin Channer to Edwidge Danticat to Jack Kerouac, from Kamau Brathwaite to Saul Williams, from Roots Manuva to Mos Def to Tanya Stephens to Protoje to Lauryn Hill and straight back to The Roots…the list goes on and on.

Growing up in school, my teachers would always encourage me to pursue a career in writing, because they believed I was a naturally good writer. I started out writing short stories, then gradually poetry, which then later developed into lyrics and rhymes. It wasn’t until I went away to college that I was brave enough to actually share these rhymes and lyrics with others. So, my musical journey as an artist began in Gainesville, Florida, where I was a member of an underground collective called 101 Vibes.

Stay tuned for more about Coppa, including a music video.

Q+A with LEAF Singer-Songwriter Competition Finalist Stephen Sylvester

Sunday, May 1st, 2022

Who’s over six feet tall, an old soul, and definitely doesn’t have a “V” in his first name? You guessed it—Stephen Sylvester, a down-to-earth country artist whose unique and powerful voice is reminiscent of the great R&B singers of the ’60s. He’s living just like his mama taught him, a true-to-his-roots force to be reckoned with. You’ll want to remember this true Southern gentleman: check out Stephen Sylvester’s new album Let Me Be Strong on Spotify or Apple Music.

NewSong Music: What was your intro to music?

My dad was a prolific Christian singer-songwriter in the ’90s, so music was a part of our home from my earliest memories. That plus all the Disney movies meant young Stephen sang A LOT, but my musical awakening happened because of Stevie Wonder, oddly enough. I distinctly remember hearing him sing when I was about 7 or 8 and thinking “I’m going to do that one day.”

What is the first song you wrote that you were proud of, and why?

That would have to be “I Promise You,” which is the song I submitted for the contest (how poetic is that?!). It’s one of my oldest songs that I’m not embarrassed to play, and it was the one that caused my first experience moving an audience emotionally. I played it for folks I didn’t know in a wine bar years ago, closed my eyes for most of it, and when I opened them everyone was crying. After that moment I figured I didn’t have much choice but to be a songwriter.

What instrument do you play, and why?

Full disclosure – I started playing acoustic guitar at 16 specifically to get a girlfriend. It didn’t work, but I fell in love with music instead! My first instrument was actually drums, and that’s still my favorite one to play, but it’s hard to be a solo performer (or get a girlfriend) as a drummer.

How did the pandemic impact you as a performer, for better or worse?

Ooof, yeah the pandemic was rough for me as I know it was for all performers and gig workers. I had about four solid months of no gigs whatsoever, and then opportunities to play started coming back slowly. Today, two years later, I’m only just now back to what I would call a regular performing schedule. The benefit, though, was that all the extra time meant way more opportunities to write, so I write and virtually co-wrote songs like a madman! And I can credit the pandemic for helping me become a much better writer if we’re talking silver linings.

Does the place you grew up inspire you as an artist? If so, in what way?

Yes absolutely, I think Coastal Alabama is about as inspiring of a place to grow up in as a kid could ask for. Scenery-wise it’s full of gorgeous beaches and wildlife, which have been a great source of visual inspiration for me. It’s also still a developing area of the country, so if as a kid I didn’t experience hardship directly it was right there in front of me. And drawing from those stories has been just as powerful of a songwriting inspiration for me as my own experiences, if not more.

In what ways does the craft of songwriting still surprise you?

The magic!! I’m the type of person who wants to over-analyze and really dig into how things work so that I can improve. But songwriting really doesn’t work like that. You get better by practicing and try new methods and know how rhyme and meter work, but there’s still something unquantifiable about writing a song. Which, for me, can be frustrating, but it’s also incredible to experience in real time – songwriting is literally magical.

What are some of your creative goals for this year?

Well my goal every year is to get George Strait to record a song I wrote for him (haha) but I’m also actively playing more regional shows now that the world seems to be opening up for music again. My manager and I are pitching songs to publishing companies trying to get me a deal, and I’m still writing and performing all the time. My unrealistic goal is to quit my day job and do full-time music by the end of the year, and who knows? I’ve been pleasantly surprised too often to think it’s impossible!

Meet NewSong finalist Jobi Riccio

Wednesday, November 13th, 2019

NewSong is proud to introduce 2019 finalist Jobi Riccio! The Boston-based singer-songwriter from Denver, CO will join her fellow finalists onstage at Isis Music Hall on Saturday Nov. 23 for the 18th annual NewSong Final Competition.

Inspired by artists ranging from Buck Owens to Joni Mitchell, and the bluegrass community she came of age in, Jobi writes songs that meld classic country sounds with modern sensibilities. Her Debut EP “Strawberry Wine” is an ode to the women of country music she grew up singing along to in her bedroom, and is streaming everywhere now.

We asked Jobi about her musical inspiration, songwriting process and what music news she has coming up in the Q&A below.

Connect with Jobi on her websiteFacebook page, Twitter and Instagram. For more information on attending this event, please visit our Facebook event page. Purchase tickets to the NewSong finals at Isis Music Hall on Nov. 23 here

What are your most significant musical/artistic inspirations?

My greatest musical influences draw from classic country and Americana music. I’m specifically drawn to female artists and songwriters like Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris, as well as their contemporaries, such as Lucinda Williams, Patty Griffin, and Kacey Musgraves. I am also very inspired by songwriters and artists who heavily draw from roots genres, such as Bruce Springsteen and Joni Mitchell.

What is your songwriting process like?

I am primarily lyrically driven. I suppose that comes as a result of steady diet of Americana, country, and singer-songwriters all throughout my childhood. In general, I try to shape the melody and chords around the lyrical or emotional idea I have and really try to channel just what that experience or feeling sounds like. However, I feel every song has its own way it wants or needs to be written, and I and am always seeking out and discovering new ways of songwriting.

What was your reaction to being named a NewSong finalist?

I was super surprised and, of course, excited! It’s a real talented crop this year, and I think I’m one of the youngest — if not the youngest — artist to be selected so I’m extra honored and excited to cultivate new friendships with writers of all ages from all over the country.

What music news would you like to share with readers?

I released my debut EP “Strawberry Wine” last winter, and am planning on releasing some new singles this spring. I’ll be preforming at Swallow Hill Music on December 21st, where I grew up taking mandolin and guitar as a teenager in addition to several Boston area shows earlier in December and early 2020.

Meet 2019 NewSong finalist Parker Ainsworth

Tuesday, November 12th, 2019

NewSong is proud to introduce 2019 finalist Parker Ainsworth! The singer-songwriter from Los Angeles, CA will join his fellow finalists onstage at Isis Music Hall on Saturday Nov. 23 for the final competition.

Parker’s song “Running for so long” was recently featured in the film The Peanut Butter Falcon (video below). His blend of Western folk and soul music earned him the Grand Prize at NewSong’s 6th Annual LEAF Competition in 2018.

We asked Parker about his musical inspiration, songwriting process and what music news he has coming up in the Q&A below.

Connect with Parker on his website, Facebook page, and Instagram. For more information on attending this event, please visit our Facebook event page. Purchase tickets here

What are your most significant musical/artistic inspirations?

Too many to name, really. I grew up on blues and country (Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash, BB King, Howling Wolf, Muddy Waters, the classics); lots of old rock (Stones, Beatles, specifically George Harrison and John Lennon made a huge impression on me); and Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan, of course, made an impact. Then I got deep into hip hop, house music and drum ‘n’ bass (Aphex Twin, Project Blowed, Tribe called Quest, Beastie Boys, Metalheads, Danny Tenaglia — pretty all over the place). Beck definitely blew my mind, and Nirvana as well. Lately, I’ve really enjoyed the older Staples singers recordings and a band called Tinariwen.

What is your songwriting process like?

Every song is different. Sometimes words come first; other times, it’s just a melody, or chord changes that evoke a feeling. The most important process for me these days is one of being present for the spark and not analyzing it until it’s become a fire. I’ve lost many potentially good ideas by judging them too early. Now I’m trying to be more curious and playful with things.

What was your reaction to being named a NewSong finalist?

I’m humbled and grateful for the opportunity.

What music news would you like to share with readers?

The Peanut Butter Falcon, a gorgeously human film that I wrote a song for earlier this year is out now. I’m also playing a show at a The Troubadour in LA opening for an artist named Desi Valentine on Dec. 10. This will be my first time to play that venue, which is a legendary home for music in Los Angeles.

Alice Howe — Visions

2018 NewSong finalist Alice Howe released a new album, Visions, this spring, and it’s a beautiful collection that deserves a spot in your summer rotation.

Via alicehowe.com: “Vistas and the faces and emotions they summon unfurl with compelling grace on Visions, Howe’s anticipated debut album. A modern love letter to 60s and 70s folk and timeless blues, Visions pays homage without succumbing to imitation, and offers an intimate snapshot of a young artist discovering her own power.”

We met Ben Lubeck, frontman of the band Farewell Milwaukee, in 2010 when he was a finalist in the NewSong competition. He recently released a series of singles, one of which is the lovely “For You Again.”  This song, explains Ben, “explores the many emotional ups and downs of a couple’s relationship as they add members to their family and the daily practice of cultivating each other’s hearts through the complex and mundane parts of life.” Check out this song as well as his other singles, “Mrs. Bluebird” and “The Show,” on the artist’s website.

Ana Egge — “Cocaine Cowboys”

Ana Egge recently released a dreamy new single, “Cocaine Cowboys,” which premiered on PopMatters

Via PopMatters: “This one started out as a song in tribute to life on the road and the camaraderie and friendship of bandmates and it quickly crossed into territory of honky-tonk life on the road,” says Ana Egge, reflecting on her new single, ‘Cocaine Cowboys.’ Hailing from her upcoming album, Is It the KissEgge’s latest is a mellow, sweetly ruminant folk tune that explores the romantic haze surrounding the stories of old-school country stars.”

MEL BRYANT WINS THE 17TH ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL NEWSONG MUSIC PERFORMANCE & SONGWRITING COMPETITION

AS GRAND PRIZE WINNER, BRYANT RECEIVES AN EP RECORDING PROJECT AT ECHO MOUNTAIN RECORDING STUDIOS, RELEASED ON THE NEWSONG RECORDINGS LABEL, A PERFORMANCE SHOWCASE AT 2019 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL’S ESTEEMED ASCAP MUSIC CAFE AND MORE

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Nashville-based singer, instrumentalist and songwriter Mel Bryant has been named this year’s grand prize winner of the seventeenth annual NewSong Music Performance and Songwriting Competition. Bryant – along with seven other finalists – was selected from nearly 800 entries to this year’s contest. The finalists performed at Isis Music Hall in Asheville, NC on Saturday, December 15, in front of a sold-out crowd. The panel of music industry judges included Gar Ragland, music producer and co-founder of NewSong Music; Diana Ezerins, director of public programs at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.; and Elysa Marden, Vice President of Arts Brookfield in New York City.

“This year’s live performance finals of the NewSong Competition was a particularly special and noteworthy one for us,” said Ragland. “Not only was the caliber of performances and songs as high as it’s ever been, it marks the first time we’ve hosted the event here in Asheville, our beloved headquarters now for the last six plus years. Moving this event to Asheville from New York’s Lincoln Center was long overdue, especially given how amazing and appreciative the fans of live music are here. The energy, enthusiasm and support that the audience provided our finalists’ made for a really magical experience for everyone involved.”

As the grand prize winner, Bryant will receive a fully funded six-song EP, recorded and mixed at Asheville’s own Echo Mountain Recording Studios and released on the NewSong Recordings label. Bryant also receives a performance showcase at the esteemed 2019 ASCAP Music Café at the Sundance Film Festival (January 31) in Park City, Utah and a featured performance in the 2019 Arts Brookfield ‘Summer Plaza’ series in New York City. All finalists receive a Shure MOTIV microphone, and will be strongly considered for future ‘NewSong Presents’ paid performances across the United States.

Bassist and songwriter Bryant leads the Nashville-based indie rock band Mel Bryant & the Mercy Makers. The four musicians moved together from Philly and New York to settle in East Nashville where they run their own recording studio, Electric Church Records, and work as the backing band for various local artists. Bryant competed in the NewSong Music Competition with her accompanist, Aaron Hicks, on acoustic guitar. Musical influences range from Fall Out Boy and Green Day to Laura Marling, B. B. King and the Allman Brothers.

“It was truly an honor just to be recognized as a finalist and to have been a part of such a wonderful night of music,” says Bryant of her win. “That show was really a career highlight and you could feel the mutual astonishment of all the finalists throughout the show— such an absolutely gorgeous group of musicians. Winning this competition could not have come at a better time for us; it’s so easy to get lost and discouraged by a career in music, but to be recognized by such a wonderful and authentic organization is incredibly heartwarming and life-affirming. I’m so excited to continue working with NewSong, and I can’t wait to see what this next chapter has in store.”

For the first time in its seventeen year history, the live performance finals of the NewSong Music Performance & Songwriting Competition was held in Asheville, NC, where NewSong Music has been headquartered since 2012. The move marks a new direction for the program, relocating from its longstanding host venue, New York City’s venerable Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.

Meet 2018 NewSong Competition finalist: Alice Howe

Monday, December 10th, 2018

From the artist’s bio: Boston singer-songwriter Alice Howe is “at once of the moment and timeless, personal and universal” (Mark Walton, Americana UK). Her pure, distilled sound reflects a musical sensibility rooted in ’60s folk and ’70s Southern California songwriters. … 2017 was the year that Alice began making big waves in the folk world. Her EP You’ve Been Away So Long debuted on the April Folk-DJ charts with a #1 song – “Homeland Blues” – and #11 album. “Homeland Blues” went on to become the #7 song for all of 2017. Alice has been touring consistently in support of the EP in throughout the US, and recently returned from a critically acclaimed tour of the UK and the Netherlands. All in the last year, she was a Falcon Ridge Folk Festival Emerging Artist, an Official Showcase Artist at FAR-West, and a Formal Showcase Artist at NERFA. Read full bio here

We asked Alice some questions about her songwriting process and what it means to be a NewSong finalist. To purchase tickets for the Dec. 15 event at Isis Music Hall, visit our ticketing page.

What does it mean to you to be selected as a NewSong finalist, and what do you hope to get out of the experience?

I am honored and thrilled to have been selected as a NewSong finalist. I consider it to be an invaluable opportunity to connect with other talented young songwriters and to learn more about and become involved in the NewSong organization. In the several years that I have been pursuing music full-time, I have learned that relationships and community are an essential part of building and sustaining a career, and I see this is a great opportunity to do exactly that.

What is your songwriting process like, and where do you find inspiration?

I have been singing and writing songs for as long as I can remember. The process has evolved considerably since my days singing into a tape recorded at age 3 1/2, but there remains a strong improvisational element to my process. I like to sit with my guitar, strumming or picking a chord progression that pleases me, and I sing whatever words come to me, changing words, trying new ones, until it feels right. I am inspired by nature, relationships, and history, and I find that I often begin my songs by painting a picture of what I see, then turning inward. I don’t always know what my songs are about when I write the first line, but I soon learn as I continue exploring.

I grew up with my parents’ vast record collection, and have always been inspired by the music of their generation, including Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Bonnie Raitt, and Taj Mahal.

What important news about your music do you have coming up?

My forthcoming full-length album, Visions, produced by Freebo (Bonnie Raitt, CSN, Ringo Starr) and recorded in Bakersfield, CA is complete and will be released in 2019. The new album features a collection of new originals and my interpretations of iconic songs such as Muddy Waters’ “Honey Bee”, “Too Long at the Fair,” first covered by Bonnie Raitt, and songs from Dylan and Taj Mahal. The musicians who recorded Visions with Alice include Freebo, Fuzzbee Morse, John Molo, and John ‘JT’ Thomas who have played or recorded with everyone from Bruce Hornsby to Lou Reed and Richie Havens, Phil Lesh, Jackson Browne, Tracy Chapman, Nick Jameson, and a who’s who of West Coast characters.
