JOBI RICCIO WINS THE 18TH ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL NEWSONG MUSIC PERFORMANCE & SONGWRITING COMPETITION

Tuesday, November 26th, 2019

Jobi Riccio is named the Grand Prize Winner of the 18th Annual NewSong Competition.

AS GRAND PRIZE WINNER, RICCIO RECEIVES AN EP RECORDING PROJECT AT ECHO MOUNTAIN RECORDING STUDIOS, RELEASED ON THE NEWSONG RECORDINGS LABEL, A PERFORMANCE SHOWCASE AT THE 2019 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL’S ESTEEMED SUNDANCE ASCAP MUSIC CAFE AND MORE

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Boston-based guitarist and songwriter Jobi Riccio has been named the 2019 grand prize winner of the eighteenth annual NewSong Music Performance and Songwriting Competition. Riccio – along with seven other finalists – was selected from nearly 800 entries to this year’s contest. The finalists performed at Isis Music Hall in Asheville, NC on Saturday, November 23, in front of a sold-out crowd. Riccio, a Denver, CO native and current Berklee College of Music student, impressed judges and audience members with her magnetic stage presence, faultless vocals and songwriting inspired by artists ranging from Buck Owens to Joni Mitchell. The panel of music industry judges included Gar Ragland, music producer and co-founder of NewSong Music; Ehren Cruz, Artistic Director & Co-Event Director for LEAF Community Arts in Asheville, NC; and Elysa Marden, Vice President of Arts Brookfield in New York City.

“It was tough. There was so much heart shown out there this evening,” says Cruz of the judges’ decision. “Jobi ultimately sang from the depth of her soul, and I think there is something so natural, fluid and charismatic about how she delivers onstage. It’s an honor to catch someone at that stage in their career and celebrate where they are, and hopefully this [NewSong win] helps her soar.”

Between songs, 22-year-old Riccio shared bits and pieces about her musical upbringing, living near Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado and listening to musical heroes like Alison Kraus soundchecking from Riccio’s backyard. Driven by the bluegrass community she came of age in, she writes songs that meld classic country sounds with modern sensibilities. Her Debut EP “Strawberry Wine” is an ode to the women of country music she grew up singing along to in her bedroom.

“I’m totally overcome by the support I felt last night and all weekend from NewSong and the greater Asheville community,” says Riccio. “I am absolutely honored to have been selected as the grand prize winner for the 2019 NewSong Competition. I can’t wait to work together again and am so grateful for all the opportunities and collaboration that lie ahead. I can’t express my gratitude enough. “

Riccio was one of three artists to advance to the final round. She was joined by Parker Ainsworth (Joshua Tree, CA) and Grant Maloy Smith (Kingston, RI). Riccio also won the People’s Choice competition, which was awarded to the songwriter with the most audience votes. Ainsworth was the People’s Choice runner-up.

“Jobi immediately won favor with the audience from the moment she first walked on stage, only then to astonish us all with her instrumental command, deeply emotive singing and most importantly, a precocious storytelling sensibility that’s well beyond her mere 22 years of age,” says Ragland of Riccio’s performance.

As the grand prize winner, Riccio will receive a fully funded six-song EP, recorded and mixed at Asheville’s own Echo Mountain Recording Studios and released on the NewSong Recordings label. Riccio also receives a performance showcase at the esteemed 2020 Sundance ASCAP Music Café at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah and a featured performance in the 2020 Arts Brookfield ‘Summer Plaza’ series in New York City.

For the second time in its eighteen-year history, the live performance finals of the NewSong Music Performance & Songwriting Competition was held in Asheville, NC, where NewSong Music has been headquartered since 2012. The move to Asheville was a long time coming for the program, which relocated from its longstanding host venue, New York City’s venerable Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.

What are your most significant musical/artistic inspirations?

The Hotelier, Pinegrove, Blake Mills, Big Thief, Neil Young, and Sun Kil Moon.

What is your songwriting process like?

For me, it’s pretty essential that the melody and rhythm guitar part materialize together. Just about everything I write starts off with a tidbit of a melody/guitar part that gets stuck in my head, followed respectively by a guitar part/melody that flows into place most naturally. After the initial idea is established, I turn off the objective and analytical side of my brain and let lyrics out until I find a phonetic current that folds into the guitar and melody. From there, I ride that current out until more direction has been uncovered and change most all of the words (because everything i’ve let out up to this point in the process is likely grammatical gibberish). And then on it’s just a slog of a pursuit for maintaining purpose and cohesion.

What was your reaction to being named a NewSong finalist?

Excitement, easily! I was lucky enough to play backup guitar in last year’s New Song finals for the eventual winner, Mel Bryant, so I was able to see firsthand how wonderfully supportive, talented, and encouraging the entire New Song community is. Because of how rare it is to find a contest environment like that, choosing to apply for myself the following year was an easy decision.

What music news would you like to share with readers?

I have my debut EP “Coming Clean” releasing in early 2020!

Grant has performed at Carnegie Hall and won numerous awards, including two Grammy certificates. One of his songs was turned into an award-winning children’s book, launching him into the world of publishing. When he isn’t playing music, Grant is also an actor.

We asked Grant about his musical inspiration, songwriting process and what music news he has coming up in the Q&A below.

What are your most significant musical/artistic inspirations?

Hank Williams, Woody Guthrie, the Beatles, and Mozart.

What is your songwriting process like?

I normally start with the music and some words at the same time, then develop the whole structure. Then I come back and write the entire lyric, which takes the most time to do.

What was your reaction to being named a NewSong finalist?

I was very excited and honored to be chosen.

What music news would you like to share with readers?

My song “Man Of Steel” has been selected as the official theme song of the National Veterans Foundation. And I appeared in the feature film “Oildale” performing my original song “I Come From America” on screen. The film is premiering in LA on December 12.

Meet 2019 NewSong finalist Danielle Ponder

Wednesday, November 6th, 2019

NewSong is proud to introduce 2019 finalist Danielle Ponder! The singer-songwriter from Rochester, New York will join our other finalists onstage at Isis Music Hall on Saturday Nov. 23 for the final competition.

Danielle performs across the U.S. with her band, Danielle Ponder and the Tomorrow People. The group transcends musical genres with a blast of deep, powerful groove and soul. According to Ponder, soul is more than a sound. “Soul music is something you feel,” she says. “It gives you goose bumps.”

Beyond Danielle’s musical talent, she is a passionate defense attorney, speaker and Adjunct Professor. She has dedicated the past 15 years to organizing and speaking up for marginalized communities. She has worked on issues such as education funding, women’s rights, and has spent the past 8 years working for criminal justice reform.

We asked Danielle about her musical inspirations, songwriting process and what music news she has coming up in the Q&A below.

Connect with Danielle on her website, Facebook page, and Instagram. For more information on attending this event, please visit our Facebook event page. Buy tickets here

What are your most significant musical/artistic inspirations?

My biggest inspirations include Nina Simone and Lauryn Hill. I’m also inspired by the blues, the black experience, and the church.

What is your songwriting process like?

Every song has its own process. Sometime I am in the airport, a line will come to me, and before I land, I have a whole song. Other times, I want to write a song, but the exact words take forever to come. But mostly I hear the music first, and then I immediately know what words belong with the music.

What was your reaction to being named a NewSong finalist?

I was excited!!! I am grateful and ready to meet new people!

What music news would you like to share with readers?

I am releasing a single on November 22nd. I will be releasing a new album in the spring.

Mel Bryant returns as guest performer for 2019 NewSong Finals

Monday, November 4th, 2019

NewSong is proud to announce that Mel Bryant — winner of the 2018 NewSong Competition — will return to Asheville this November as a guest performer for this year’s final competition.

The 18th NewSong Music Performance & Songwriting Competition final event takes place at Isis Music Hall on Saturday, November 23. Tickets available here

We are thrilled to have Bryant return to the Isis stage. We recently asked the artist about her music career post-win, as well as her advice for the new group of finalists.

“Focus less on yourself and more on who you’re surrounded by,” says Bryant. “The best thing about the NewSong Competition, aside from the amazing prizes and the beautiful show that’s put on for the finale, is the community created by all the wonderful musicians that have come through this program.”

NewSong: It’s been a year since you won the 2018 NewSong competition! Could you give us the highlight reel of what you have been up to?

Mel Bryant: Since winning the 2018 NewSong Competition, there’s been a great many amazing opportunities provided by NewSong, and truthfully most, if not all, of the highlights for the year have been thanks to NewSong. Performing at Sundance Film Festival in January was both musically inspiring and environmentally thrilling, from the beautiful snow kissed slopes and the exhilarating movie screenings to the magnificent people that we met and performed for along the way. Over the summer, we were able to build not one but TWO full tours from Nashville to New York City, with Arts Brookfield shows at the center of both, providing incredible stages, amazing sound, and wonderful audiences that often returned for multiple dates of our tours! Because of those NYC shows, I’ve been hearing from international fans asking about new music and when they’ll hear from us again.

That being said, we’ve made serious strides in our own studio in Nashville for our debut album as a band, and we can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. We hope to have the album set for release in January, with a single coming out very soon. We’ve had dozens of successful shows and lots of wonderful times making new music and meeting new collaborators, and we are especially excited to meet and hear the finalists this year. I’m sure it’ll be another highlight to add to the reel!

How did winning the NewSong competition affect you personally? How has it affected your career?

Winning the NewSong competition was an immensely needed confidence boost in a time when I can personally get mired in self criticism of my music and the value of my art. It feels so wonderful to know there are really amazing people in the NewSong family that are rooting for me and helping to bolster my belief in myself. It has given me so much freedom and power to carry on making more music and consistently improving and honing my craft in order to present the best version of my music when we go to record the NewSong EP. we’ve been looking forward to it all year and we cannot wait to get into Echo Mountain and lay down our newest, best songs.

What advice do you have for this year’s finalists?

My advice to this year’s finalists is to focus less on yourself and more on who you’re surrounded by. The best thing about the NewSong Competition, aside from the amazing prizes and the beautiful show that’s put on for the finale, is the community created by all the wonderful musicians that have come through this program. Collaboration is the heart of the greatest music I know, and even if it’s just a source of inspiration or a new cowriter, the friendships we make like this are what keeps the world of music turning.

Anything else you would like to share?

I just wanted to send a big huge thank you to the NewSong folks and an equally big congratulations to this year’s finalists! I’m so excited for this show and I’m honored to be a part of it once again!
