2. Beth Snapp – Model City 11/3

Beth Snapp continues to perform in support of her recent EP release, Don’t Apologize. This week, you can catch her at Model City Tap House in Kingsport, TN on Saturday, Nov. 3. “To me, this EP is a continuation of a journey,” says Snapp. “My second project was largely an account of just coming out of a storm. I had survived, I knew things were going to get better, but there was some healing and processing to be done. As time passed, and I did the work to heal, I emerged into a new place. I realized that surviving the storm wasn’t enough. I realized I was put on this Earth to do more than survive.”

For more information about the show, visit the Facebook event page. Listen to Beth Snapp on Spotify

3. Max Hatt / Edda Glass – Album spotlight

In honor of Max Hatt / Edda Glass recording a new album in Seattle this month, we would like to spotlight the Jazz-Americana duo’s previous album, Ocean of Birds. As grand prize winners of the international NewSong performance and songwriting competition, the duo’s prize included the recording of this album in April 2015 at Asheville, NC’s Echo Mountain Recording Studios.

”I was mesmerized from the first moment I heard them,” says album producer Pat Sansone (Wilco, The Autumn Defense) of their cinematic sound. “They have the ability to create a deep sonic landscape with only voice and guitar, with songs that posses a mysterious and soulful magic.”

Purchase Ocean of Birds on Bandcamp. Listen to the album on Spotify

4. Chris velan – “Amateur HOUr” launch show in Montreal

Chris Velan will play a show at Petit Campus in Montreal on Thursday Nov. 1 for the launch of his latest album, Amateur Hour. A single off the album, “All Time Record” charted on CBC Radio’s top 30 songs of the week in September, and the record has been met with praise from critics. Meet Sanctuary Sessions performer Max Hatt / Edda Glass

Friday, June 8th, 2018

Max Hatt / Edda Glass are a Jazz Americana duo from Santa Fe, NM whose literate lyrics and unique sound leave listeners haunted, in a good way. Glass’s impeccable, singular vocals pair with Hatt’s equally distinctive guitar work. Together, the two combine the harmonic innovations of jazz and classical with the melodic resonance of folk. Max Hatt / Edda Glass will perform as part of the Sanctuary Sessions series Saturday, June 9th at the Central United Methodist Church in downtown Asheville. All proceeds go to benefit Blue Ridge Public Radio. Songwriter Becca Leigh shares the bill.

Max Hatt / Edda Glass and Becca Leigh will share the stage at the Central United Methodist Church in downtown Asheville June 9th as part of NewSong Music’s Sanctuary Sessions series.

Glass says public radio has a crucial role to play in the music industry and beyond. “You hear about there being a crisis in the music industry, which is funny because there’s an overwhelming number of both music lovers and talented musicians out there,” says Glass. The tricky part is bringing those two groups together— and that’s exactly what the hosts at Blue Ridge Public Radio and Gar Ragland at NewSong music do. They do it on air and online and best of all they’re bringing us all together in real time and space at the Sanctuary — that’s not just a community service; that’s community itself.”

Not only does public radio support musicians, says Glass, but they are also indispensable when it comes to how we get our news, perhaps now more than ever before. “Independent, member-supported, nonprofit news sources like Blue Ridge Public Radio are vital to the survival of democracy in these truly weird and disturbing times,” she says.

“I hope people will come out for the Sanctuary Sessions as a sanctuary from all that division/confusion/alienation — no matter what you believe or where you get your news,” says Glass. “Music has always had the power to bring us together— to quote another troubled time period: music is love, and love is real.”

“Beautiful music that is subtly poignant, elegantly funky, and haunting without trying to be. Their songs are direct yet often take unexpected and colorful harmonic twists and turns, delighting the ear.” – Nels Cline (Wilco, Nels Cline Singers)

Max Hatt / Edda Glass features ethereal guitar, an unmistakeable voice, and the duo’s award-winning Jazz Americana compositions. “We want to write about a world both intimate and vast, about little people on great plains,” says Glass. “Plus sometimes we throw in a little Bossa Nova.” Their 2016 “Ocean of Birds Tour” kicks off with NPR Mountain Stage and takes them across the country and several genres, from the jazz clubs of Manhattan to Nashville’s record stores and New England’s folk fests. Based in Santa Fe, NM, the duo first hit the national stage at NYC’s Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, where they won the 2014 Grand-Prize of the international Mountain Stage / NewSong Competition. Produced by Pat Sansone of Wilco & Autumn Defense, Ocean of Birds releases May 20th on NewSong Recordings, and is available for pre-order at PledgeMusic [ http://www.pledgemusic.com/maxhatteddaglass ] .

In 2014, Max Hatt / Edda Glass played at NYC’s Lincoln Center where they won grand-prize at the Mountain Stage / NewSong Contest and generally defied categorization. 2015 saw the them tour coast to coast, from Sundance Film Festival’s ASCAP Music Cafe to a headlining concert at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. NewSong Recordings will release their debut album, Ocean of Birds, on May 20th 2016, produced by Pat Sansone of Wilco & Autumn Defense. They have this to say: We’re interested in stories. How a melody comes home soundly to a place it didn’t grow up. How a major chord troubles your sleep with minor insinuations. How we look to the horizon, no matter how wide the plain between us.

Oceans Of Birds, the debut album from Jazz-Americana duo Max Hatt / Edda Glass is out now via NewSong Recordings. Of their music Pat Sansone (Wilco, The Autumn Defense) says, “I was mesmerized from the first moment I heard them. They have the ability to create a deep sonic landscape with songs that possess a mysterious and soulful magic.” You can download the record here: bit.ly/ocean-of-birds-itunes

To celebrate the release, the Sante Fe-based duo will tour nationwide this summer with shows in New York, Baltimore, Chicago, Burlington, etc. See below for a full list of U.S. tour dates.

Recently, The Huffington Post premiered their single “Wanted,” while Relix premiered the official music video for “Crossing Over.” Watch the video here: http://bit.ly/1S8Il0O

Ocean Of Birds was produced and mixed by Sansone and Josh Shapera (Liam Hayes, The Autumn Defense) with Gar Ragland (Arthur Alligood, Chris Velan) and was recorded at Asheville, North Carolina’s Echo Mountain Recording Studios. Of the album Hatt says, “The amazing [part] about the making of Ocean of Birds is that we all found each other. That Pat Sansone heard and dug our compositions. I think its a testament to the power of music to find an audience, if it can be heard. And in the process we all created a unique hybrid that bridges the gap between jazz harmony, literate lyrics and people’s ears. Pat was a big part of that.” Glass adds, “We want to write about a world both intimate and vast, about little people on Great Plains.”

Max Hatt / Edda Glass

After playing Bossa Nova in Montana for ten years, Max Hatt / Edda Glass emerged with their original music for a grand prize win at the 2014 NewSong Competition, held at Lincoln Center in New York City. “Max Hatt / Edda Glass often defied categorization,” said Gar Ragland, the contest’s director, calling them, “arguably the most distinctive finalist act let alone winner we’ve ever had.” Last winter, they played at the 2015 Sundance Film Fest, where ASCAP’s Playback Magazine described their sets as “mesmerizing cinematic folk jazz.”

Glass got her start singing Bossa Nova in Montana—as she likes to say, “There’s something poignant about singing Girl from Ipanema when it’s negative forty out.” Hatt grew up in the Chicago-land area, studying jazz guitar in Indiana University’s David Baker program, Michigan State and in classes led by Pat Metheny, Julian Lage and Lee Ritenour.
