New this year: in addition to performing on NPR's Mountain Stage Show, this year's NewSong Contest winner will get a 5-song EP recorded and produced by Grammy-winning producer Jacquire King (Norah Jones, Tom Waits, Kings of Leon, Modest Mouse).

Now in its ninth year, the Mountain Stage NewSong Contest is one of North America’s premier showcases of emerging performing songwriters that spans an array of genres, and includes regional rounds.

The 2010 contest winner will get the opportunity to record an EP with 2010 Grammy winning producer Jacquire King (Kings of Leon, Norah Jones) which will be released on the NewSong Recordings label. In addition, the winner will get to perform on an internationally broadcast Mountain Stage (NPR) show, and will receive 1,000 copies of the completed disc. More prizes will be announced as the year unfolds. This is a unique opportunity to work with a top producer and move your career to the next level.

NewSong’s partner MOUNTAIN STAGE® is public television and radio’s venerable live performance music program, produced both on the road and at home and heard worldwide on more than 125 radio stations, XM Satellite Radio and the “Voice of America.” Now in its 26th year, the show has a long and storied tradition of featuring national and international acts in all styles of music and of launching emerging acts to stardom.

Mountain Stage presents acts ranging from traditional roots, blues and country, to avant-garde rock, world beat, jazz and more. The show's guest list is the most stylistically varied of any national radio or television performance program. It has showcased over two thousand artists since 1983. The short list of those who have made their national debut on the show include the Barenaked Ladies, Ryan Adams, Sheryl Crow, Norah Jones and Alison Krauss.

Jacquire King

Jacquire King is a two-time Grammy award winning producer, engineer and mixer based in Nashville, TN. Jacquire has worked with a wide range of artists including Kings of Leon, Norah Jones, Augustana, Modest Mouse, Tom Waits among others. Jacquire was recently awarded a Grammy for “Record of the Year” for Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody,” which he produced, engineered and mixed. Jacquire also received a Grammy for engineering the “Best Traditional Blues Album” in 2003 for Buddy Guy’s “Blues Singer.” Presently, Jacquire is producing the follow-up album for Kings of Leon and the forthcoming album for Cold War Kids. And this year’s winner of the NewSong Contest will get a chance to work with him on their own 5-song EP.

In the end, the overall winner is the entrant deemed to have the strongest combination of both songwriting and performance skills.

Regional round finalists (10 for each region, sixty in all), Early Bird and General Round winners are determined by the material they submit.

Regional round winners (6) are determined by their submitted material, AS WELL AS their live performance ability as determined by their YouTube videos (once selected, ALL regional round finalists are required to submit a link to a YouTube performance video).

The 'People's Choice' Award winner (the regional finalist who ultimately receives the most votes) will also advance to the 'Award Round.'

A total of twelve (12) 'Award Round' semifinalists will be selected to come to New York to to perform in the international 'Award Round,' held this year in late October in New York City.

Two 'Early Bird' semi-finalists wil be selected from entrants to the general round who submit before Tuesday, June 15. As Early Bird winners, they'll join the winners of each of our six regional rounds along with the remaining three general round finalists and for the first time this year, a People's Choice winner.

NOTE: ALL general round entrants who were eligible for Early Bird consideration are still in the running for the remaining four general round spots of the Mountain Stage NewSong Contest finals. If you'd like to be considered for a regional round spot though, please see below.

Performing songwriters in the states and regions below can enter songs in their respective Regional Rounds by August 6-- 10 finalists in each region will be selected to compete in ‘virtual’ live contests. The winner of each round will advance to the international finals. Entry discounts for regional rounds are available to active members of qualifying organizations.

New this year, our regional finals will be “virtual.” Entrants who advance to a regional round will be asked to upload a video performance of a song to YouTube. NewSong Contest judges will review each finalist’s footage to select a winner. In addition to the official winner there will be a "People's Choice" award for each region based on popular vote through our website.

NOTE: You do NOT have to submit a video when initally entering the contest. If you are selected as a regional finalist, however, you will be required to have at least one video performance available on YouTube.

Prizes

The 2010 contest winner will get the opportunity to record an EP with 2010 Grammy winning producer Jacquire King (Kings of Leon, Norah Jones) which will be released on the NewSong Recordings label. In addition, the winner will get to perform on an internationally broadcast Mountain Stage (NPR) show, which has showcased over two thousand artists since 1983. The short list of those who have made their national debut on the show include the Barenaked Ladies, Ryan Adams, Sheryl Crow, Norah Jones, Alison Krauss and NewSong Recordings artist and former contest standouts and NewSong Recordings artists Chris Velan, Jeff Ellis and Diana Jones.

The winner will also receive 1,000 copies of the completed disc.

Each finalist (5 in all) selected in the 'Award Round' will receive $300. Finalists and other contest standouts will also be invited to participate in future NewSong productions in various locations throughout the country, and will be candidates for film and television placement opportunities, as well as for future releases on the NewSong Recordings label. Non-winning finalists will also be considered for future Mountain Stage appearances.

One finalist in the Award Round will also be selected the "Best Song" category winner and receive a separate $300 cash prize.

Contestants should designate the style of song they consider their entry to fit when entering tunes. The categories are: Rock & Blues, Americana, Folk, World, Christian, Country, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Pop/Alternative, Children's, Humor and Other/Open.
